I think you are very wise in reducing the "number of plates" you have spinning at any one time to allow yourself to mentally breath.

I find it is important to give myself permission to occasionally stray from the restrictions of "self development". That way, I feel more in control and my straying is then likely to be confined only to the one area affected.

I like to think about having a life I can enjoy, day to day.....sometimes called "enjoying the journey" and then work to improve it gently from the outside, in.

Each plate should be allowed to "wobble" without serious recriminations.
