It’s Euro 2020, England versus Germany, and I’m nervous
Can we really beat our demons and progress to the quarter-finals?
Ok, this may not be of interest to everyone but let me tell you, every 2 years we arrive at days like this. Yes, it is Euro 2020 and we have reached the knockout stages.
For those of you who are still with me but not sure what I am talking about, it is all about football, or if you are one of my American friends, soccer!!
So, why every 2 years. Well, every 2 years we have the European Championships (Euros) alternating with The World Cup. Yes, I know, it is 2021 and the tournament is called Euro 2020. Blame Covid-19 for that because it has been postponed from last year.
Those who follow football will know, England won the World Cup in 1966. Let’s face it, we never stop banging on about it. A fantastic achievement, beating West Germany, as they were known then, 4–2 in extra time at Wembley Stadium, London. However, ever since then it has been a case of disappointment at various stages of the tournaments, amounting to 55 “years of hurt.”
So here we are, 29th June 2021 and it is England versus Germany, in a major tournament, all over again, also at Wembley, just as in 1966. This time, not in the final but in the round of 16.
